Research area and interests

Passive and active remote sensing of the atmosphere from ground-based, airborne, and spaceborne platforms, development of inversion methods, radiative transfer modeling of scattering media and radar meteorology issues. Radio and optical propagation topics in relation to incoherent wave modeling, scintillation prediction and rain fading analysis along terrestrial and satellite links.


Research Facilities

Hardware

The RadioMetLab (Rome, Italy) includes:

· 1 X-band scanning mini-radar covering the Roman area for 3D precipitation remote sensing (RadioMetLab)

· 1 Disdrometer to evaluate the drop size distribution (RadioMetLab)

· 1 VLF sensor to estimate lightning activity (RadioMetLab)

· 1 microwave and millimetre-wave -wave radiometer to estimate integrated water vapour and cloud liquid/ice content (RadioMetLab)

· 1 mini-lidar at near infrared to estimate cloud layers and aerosol contents (RadioMetLab)

Software

· FSO hydrometeor scattering simulator, based on Matlab code and focused on fog, rain and snow parameterized effects and Mie scattering approach.

· FSO link budget simulator, in Matlab code.

Measurement Database

· Continuous measurements, available since Sept. 2011, of FSO power at 1550 nm within the RomeFTS (Rome FSO Test Site)

· Continuous measurements, available since Sept. 2011 of near-surface temperature, pressure, humidity, wind and rainfall within the RomeFTS

· Continuous measurements, available since Sept. 2011, of mini-radar precipitation maps within the RomeFTS

· Continuous measurements, available since Sept. 2011, of didsrometer within the RomeFTS
