Research area and interests

Advanced optical communications. This includes research on ultra-fast transmission in optical transparent networks, wavelength multiplexing (DWDM and CWDM), optical fiber access (FTTH), non-linear optical effects, application of innovative photonic crystal technologies, microstructured fibers, characterization of polarization mode dispersion (PMD), reliability of optical components and networks, design, modeling, and optimization of optical networks, implementation of optical IP networks, research on elastic optical networks, energy efficiency, and assurance of Quality of Service (QoS).

Research Facilities


· Testing of optical fiber cables and passive components, in particular connectors and patch cords to Polish and international standards; measurements of: attenuation, return loss, PMD, OTDR, environmental tests, etc.;

· Characterization of transmission, mechanical and thermal properties of standard and specialty optical fibers, also when subject to external factors, like temperature, aging, strain, twist etc.;

· The department runs an accredited fiber optic test laboratory, performing conformance and certification testing of optical fiber cables and passive components.


· Modeling of physical constrains in optical communication systems, fiber access networks (FTTH-PON), DWDM and ultra-fast terabyte transmission with self-developed Fiber Optic Communication System Simulator;

· Modeling, design, and optimization of modern optical communication networks taking into account the quality of service (QoS), physical layer impairments (PLI), energy efficiency (EE), and elastic spectrum assignment (SA);

· Methods have been developed to design and optimization of optical burst switching (OBS) networks with quality of transmission (QoT) and quality of service (QoS) guarantees, in particular: i) an OBS node architecture with signal regeneration, ii) a QoT estimator model, and iii) an integer linear programming (ILP) models and heuristic algorithms for the network planning problem have been proposed;

· ILP models and heuristics for the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) problem in elastic optical networks (EON) have been proposed;

· Numerical and analytical models to assess transmission distance as a function of the optical fiber and system properties (i.e. fiber attenuation, dispersion, nonlinearity, power spectral density, and modulation format) have been developed; the models can be used in algorithms for EON planning and optimization.

Measurement Database

· Expertise in photonic crystal technologies, microstructured fibers (PCF) and sub-wavelength photonics;

· Expertise in installation and testing of optical fiber local, access, metro and core networks;

· Consultancy and training services for operators and installers of fiber networks; this includes DWDM, CWDM, FTTH and high capacity core/metro networks, fiber optic cabling technologies for telecommunications, LANs and power networks, as well as troubleshooting and characterization of optical fiber networks and their components;

· Standardization work on cables, components and materials for communication networks. Employees of the Department are NIT representatives in the Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN) in the “Fiber Optics” (KT82) and “Wires and Cables” (KT53) Committees. This includes work on IEC and CENELEC standards, also within IEC TC86 “Fibre Optics”.
