Research area and interests

Optical wireless communication - in the infrared and visible range - is an attractive solution, especially in environments where radio communication encounters difficulties. The Fraunhofer HHI applies modern transmission techniques that enable data-rates up to 1.25 Gbit/s (present world record) using LED-lamps, which are simultaneously used for lighting. Topics addressed in this field of R&D are to develop simple optical frontends using off-the-shelf components and standard interfaces, to achieve robust communication without transceiver alignment (no pointing and tracking), to optimize transmitters and receivers for high bandwidth, high linearity and high signal-to-noise ratios, to apply spectrally efficient modulation, and to support of multi-user communication.

Free-space optical (FSO) links (> 1 Gbit/s) over long distances have been made possible by the development of key technologies in the near infrared: high-power lasers, high-speed compo­nents, high-sensitivity detectors, cost-efficient optics. To face the current FSO challenges, HHI develops techniques to increase the link reliability and exploits its expertise on fiber-based terrestrial networks.
