Research area and interests


Optical wireless communications in terms of indoor and short range applications in the visible and near infrared spectrum form the core of research activities. There is ongoing work in radio over optical wireless, underwater communications, and optical wireless links between sensor networks. We are leading a research effort in vehicular optical wireless in terms of intranets and control systems. The distribution of multimedia within vehicles as well is being undertaken by simulation and eventual implementation. We also are now working in new fabrication technologies for optical wireless signal processing and communications, using polymer chemistry and new hybrid materials. These offer hybrid functions as well as straight optical components to order, and integrated optoelectronics within the polymer structures.


Research Facilities



· We can develop specialist hardware for optical wireless in terms of high bandwidth (>= 1GHz) receivers, and specialised optical components for custom designs using polymers.


· We perform channel modelling underwater as well as in the near field in air (not distance communications, i.e. less than 3 metres usually).
