Research area and interests

Aniceto Belmonte is a researcher with more than eighteen years experience in technical projects, working knowledge of free-space laser systems, and extent background on end-to-end optical system modeling and simulation. His research achievements are primarily in the field of optics, especially in the development of coherent methods and techniques for laser communication and laser radar systems.

He has been conducting theoretical investigations relating to generation, free space propagation, interaction with various media and detection of electromagnetic light fields of both deterministic and random nature. In coherent laser radar systems affected by atmospheric turbulence, he has pioneered the use of optical compensation techniques to increase the reliability and accuracy of the measurements. In the field of free-space laser communications, he is now working on developing a first prototype of a coherent optical communication satellite transceiver, where spectrally efficient modulation and coding methods, coherent detection and associated digital signal processing algorithms, and optical compensation of atmospheric effects need to be considered.


Research Facilities


· The Free-Space Optical Systems Group performs research on advanced communication techniques for free-­space links. Experiments are performed in a state-of-the-art facility at the Technical University of Catalonia, BarcelonaTech. The available research resources includes a well-equipped lab with two optical tables, CW and pulsed lasers at different wavelengths (IR, Visible), detector modules at different frequency bands, complex optical modulators, spectrum analyzers, adaptive optics system, and all necessary optical and electronic instrumentation, and digital and computing equipment.

· Several homemade free-space optical systems are kept in good use in our facilities. At this moment, a direct-detection communication system (PPM modulation), an adaptive coherent communication system (PSK modulation), and an atmospheric lidar system (aerosol and climate monitoring) are at different stages of development and characterization.
