Research Area and Interests

Dr. Luis Nero Alves obtained his Licenciatura, Master and PhD degrees in 1996, 2001 and 2008, respectively. His work has been focused on integrated circuit design for infrared wireless optic applications, with special emphasis on signal to noise measurement for diversity receivers and optical signal detection and amplification. Since 2003, he is with the Department of Electronics Telecommunications and Informatics from the Aveiro University, where he teaches electronic related disciplines. His research activities are performed under IT, a research institution devoted to electronics and telecommunications placed inside the university campus. His current research interests are focused on visible light communication (VLC) system design, for outdoor scenarios. Case studies exploit the potential of VLC usage for applications such as intelligent transportation systems and public illumination systems.

Research Facilities


· Access to well-equipped radio frequency laboratories, with measuring equipment covering frequencies up to 50GHz. These include spectrum analysers, arbitrary signal generators, vector network analysers, probing station, oscilloscopes, thermic and humidity chambers, and high-end supply voltages.

· Visible light communication prototype: this prototype was conceived to broadcast low data rate (20kbps) information between a traffic light post and a car. It is able to cover a 50m distance range, and operate under direct sun exposure.

· Basic photometric measurement equipment: luxmeter and radiometer.

· FPGA development boards (mostly from Xilinx).

· Access to two layer PCB production facilities.

· Access to ASIC production facilities under the Europractice Agreement.


· Cadence DFWII for ASIC design.

· Cadence Orcad for PCB design.

· Xilinx ISE development tools.

· Altera development tools.

· Matlab and Mathematica.

Measurement Database

Available databases concern characterization measurements taken with a VLC prototype developed for low data rate information broadcast between traffic light posts and vehicles. These measurements include:

· Radiation pattern measurements

· Bit error rate statistics under several operational conditions:

· Indoor controlled environment.

· Outdoor with sun light exposure and clear sky.

· Outdoor during night-time and clear sky.
