Research Area and Interests

With more than 70 scientific staff, the Institute of Telecommunications (ITC – www.tc.tuwien.ac.at) is one of the largest in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Vienna University of Technology. It covers the entire area of communication technologies, systems and subsystems. Research focuses on wired and wireless transmission subsystems, optical subsystems and networks, optical wireless communication (mainly related to intersatelite links, protocols and energy efficiency), next generation networks, cellular radio transmission systems and networks, coding and compression theory, multimedia systems and applications, as well as the application of antenna arrays and advanced signal processing techniques.

Optical spectrum analyser

· Network Testbeds

A DWDM network with 3 nodes and 80 channel MUX/DEMUX (9 channels equipped with SDH – 4 channels with 2.5 Gbit/s) in a bi-directional ring configuration. The nodes are connected by two links (SSMF) of 100 km length and a 300 km fiber link with two EDFA modules.

A DWDM network testbed with 5 nodes, 9 optical amplifiers and 16 channel MUX/ DEMUX (4 channels equipped with SDH).

Electrical Test Facilities

· Logic analysing system (400 MHz state and 2 GHz timing)

· Oscilloscope 1.5 GHz bandwidth

Simulation Facilities

A computer cluster available primarily for simulation activities, currently composed of 16 nodes (Intel Core i7, Quad Core, 64bit, 32 GB RAM) and two servers (Intel XEON 8-core processors, 64bit, 16 GB RAM), interconnected by two GbE switches.
